On Saturday, HB 2265—a bill passed by the Arizona legislature and signed into law by Governor Hobbs to eliminate constitutional due process fees for jury trials, public defenders, and appeals—went into effect.
HB 2265 was a key bill supported by Stand for Children Arizona during the 2026 legislative session to ensure that no one is denied their constitutional due process rights because of an inability to pay. The bill passed out of the State House of Representatives 51-0 and the State Senate 24-5.
“We are grateful that HB 2265 has taken effect, and hope Arizona’s courts implement it quickly and seamlessly,” said Stand for Children Arizona Executive Director Rebecca Gau. “This is a crucial new law to ensure that every Arizonan can access their constitutional due process rights. But this is just the first step in our mission to eliminate the fines and fees that keep Arizonans in the criminal justice system long after their sentence is over and prevents them from starting their second chance.”
