Indianapolis – Parent advocates from Stand for Children Indiana have issued the following statements responding to last night’s move by the acting chair of the IPS board of commissioners to shut down a vote directing the IPS administration to maintain a unified enrollment system.
At last night’s board action session, a majority of the IPS board signaled their intent to direct the district to keep Enroll Indy to preserve a unified enrollment process, which allows families to fill out a common application to choose public schools across IPS – from traditional schools to innovation schools to public charter schools. Instead, acting President Nicole Carey made a procedural motion to halt a majority vote. The move came after several parents spoke up during public comment to call on IPS to keep a unified enrollment system.

Statement from IPS parent Dontia Dyson:
“As an IPS parent, I’m incredibly upset by the administration and trick that was played last night by acting chair Nicole Carey. Advocates showed up to speak up for Enroll Indy and unified enrollment, which is so important for parents who don’t have the time or resources to navigate a complicated system to make the best school choices for our children.
“IPS is moving to a system where parents who have the means to game the enrollment process will do that, while other families are left to fill out multiple applications with no guarantee we find the right fit for our students. It’s not equitable – it takes us backwards and frankly is an indication the district is not standing up for families and children that need the most help.”
Statement from public charter school parent Chaklan Lacy, who spoke at last night’s meeting:
“What happens [if IPS moves from Enroll Indy] to the parent who is considering both an IPS school and a charter school? What about the grandmother raising her grandchildren? The parent working two jobs? The family with limited internet access, or the parent who doesn’t know the difference between all of the different school systems?
“Those families shouldn’t have to become experts on our education system just to find the right school for their child . . . We are asking [IPS] to reconsider your move out of Enroll Indy and stand up for families who need a single enrollment process.”
