and Why Your Voice Matters
IPEC advances a 2026 Indianapolis school referendum.
The Indianapolis Public Education Corporation (IPEC) has voted to move a new school funding proposal forward. This sets up an important decision for voters this November.
If approved, the four-year referendum would generate new funding to support public schools serving students across the IPS district boundary. It would invest in critical areas like student services, educator support, and school programs that prepare students for the future.
Unlike many referendums that appear on ballots with eight-year terms, this proposal has a shorter, four-year lifespan. Notably, this shorter timeline reflects its role as a bridge. It will help ensure public schools of all types can continue to operate and serve students. Meanwhile, IPEC will further assess community needs and determine what a longer-term funding solution should look like across the district.
It’s also important to be clear: this referendum will not solve every financial challenge facing schools. However, it represents an important opportunity for the community to come together and invest in students across Indianapolis.
Community Voices at the IPEC Meeting
At Monday night’s meeting, several advocates connected to Stand for Children Indiana attended to listen, engage, and speak about the importance of investing in students.
Many speakers voiced support for the referendum and emphasized keeping student needs at the center of decision-making.

Together, these voices reflect a shared theme: students and families must remain at the center of decisions as the process moves forward.
