The Memphis Pre-K initiative is a ballot referendum proposed by the city council. The purpose of the referendum is to raise the city’s sales tax by one-half percent (0.5%) which would raise the rate from 9.25% to 9.75%, or the equivalent of the sales taxes in all of the municipalities. This would fully fund high quality Pre-K for more than 4,500 children in Memphis currently left out of the Pre-K system due to a lack of funding. In addition, this proposed referendum would also generate 20 million dollars that will be earmarked to reduce property taxes.
