

{"id":352,"date":"2021-10-15T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/?p=352"},"modified":"2026-04-03T19:18:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T19:18:29","slug":"building-bridges-to-dual-credit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/our-stories\/building-bridges-to-dual-credit\/","title":{"rendered":"Building Bridges to Dual Credit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Good news: there has been significant progress in Washington towards a more equitable education for every student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Today, we\u2019re\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/08\/Academic-Acceleration-District-Tracker-2021.pdf\">publishing a report<\/a>\u00a0that shows<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>a majority of Washington school districts have adopted an Academic Acceleration dual credit policy that is rooted in racial equity.<\/strong>\u00a0Our path is bending towards justice in Washington as we celebrate the removal of historic barriers for students of color and students from low-income families.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a milestone almost a decade in the making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div aria-label=\"Offset Gallery\" class=\"wp-block-coblocks-gallery-offset alignwide\"><ul class=\"coblocks-gallery has-caption-style-dark has-large-images has-medium-gutter\"><li class=\"coblocks-gallery--item\"><figure class=\"wp-block-coblocks-gallery-offset__figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"533\" height=\"524\" src=\"https:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/08\/Academic-Acceleration-Adoption-By-Year.gif\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"354\" class=\"wp-image-354\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2012 and 2013, Federal Way and Tacoma school districts paved the way when they began automatically enrolling students into the next most rigorous course they were qualified for. Federal Way saw a 70% increase in dual credit enrollment and Tacoma tripled its dual credit enrollment for students of color from 19.5% to 60% by 2018, with no drop corresponding in student passage rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It hasn\u2019t taken long for this approach to catch on. As the map above shows, the policy has spread across the state and schools continue to demonstrate significant gains for underrepresented student groups in dual credit courses.&nbsp;<strong>Now, we\u2019re celebrating the fact that 160 school districts have adopted a policy and joined the movement towards dual credit equity!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/08\/Academic-Acceleration-District-Tracker-2021.pdf\">You can review the current list of districts that have adopted a policy in our Building Bridges report, published today.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div aria-label=\"Offset Gallery\" class=\"wp-block-coblocks-gallery-offset alignwide\"><ul class=\"coblocks-gallery has-caption-style-dark has-large-images has-large-gutter\"><li class=\"coblocks-gallery--item\"><figure class=\"wp-block-coblocks-gallery-offset__figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/08\/Academic-Acceleration-Building-Bridges-Report-October-2021.gif\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"355\" class=\"wp-image-355\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When Stand advocates and partners were fighting for statewide adoption of this policy in 2019, former Washington State Teacher of the Year Nate Bowling\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/education-lab\/guest-essay-we-need-to-stop-gatekeeping-advanced-classes\/\">wrote in The Seattle Times<\/a>\u00a0about the impact of Academic Acceleration in his district:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe underrepresentation of students of color and low-income students in advanced courses is a long-term driver and consequence of societal inequality.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We are not doomed to repeat the mistakes and failures of the past. In Tacoma \u2014 where I teach \u2014 our standard is to try to make our advanced classes demographically representative of our schools. It\u2019s an official policy called Academic Acceleration. We never turn a kid away \u2014 even jocks who may be surprised to learn they qualify for advanced courses find themselves in my classroom.<strong>&nbsp;This policy works, sometimes even after the students (or their parents) express hesitation at the start of the school year about taking on advanced coursework<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"802\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/08\/celina-dual-credit.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/08\/celina-dual-credit.png 802w, https:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/08\/celina-dual-credit-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/08\/celina-dual-credit-768x472.png 768w, https:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/08\/celina-dual-credit-60x37.png 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 802px) 100vw, 802px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington state is committed to increasing enrollment in dual credit courses as a tool for addressing inequity.
