{"id":1030,"date":"2024-02-02T23:45:26","date_gmt":"2024-02-02T23:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/?p=1030"},"modified":"2026-04-03T18:45:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T18:45:09","slug":"legislative-roll-call-week-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stand.org\/washington\/our-stories\/legislative-roll-call-week-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Legislative Roll Call: Week 4"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This week marked the first major deadline of legislative session &#8211; all bills had to receive a vote in the policy committee by Wednesday 1\/31. We are now racing towards the second major cutoff &#8211; all bills that have a projected cost greater than $50,000 must receive a hearing and vote in a fiscal committee by Monday 2\/5. The fiscal committees are meeting all day Saturday and Monday to try and move through as many bills as possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stand-wa-priority-bills\"><strong>Stand WA Priority Bills:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>HB 2053 (Ninth Grade Success Initiative) has received a hearing in a fiscal committee but has not yet been scheduled for a vote. If it doesn\u2019t receive a vote by Monday the bill won\u2019t advance, but we can still advocate for funding in the budget.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SB 5974 (eliminating uncollectible juvenile court debt) was voted out of the Senate this week with a strong bipartisan vote. This is great news and means the bill is moving well ahead of schedule! It now needs to move through the process in the House of Representatives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-important-priorities\"><strong>Other important priorities:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stand WA convenes the High School Success Coalition, which is prioritizing bills that support high school students to access post-secondary opportunities this session.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=2214&amp;Year=2023&amp;Initiative=false\">HB 2214<\/a> would ensure those receiving food benefits (such as SNAP) are automatically qualified for the Washington College Grant. This bill was heard in House appropriations yesterday and is scheduled for a vote on Saturday.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=2025&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2023\">HB 2025<\/a> would expand the number of students participating in the state work study program working in college access programs. It is scheduled for a hearing in House Appropriations on Saturday and for a vote on Monday. <a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/csi\/House?cId=31634&amp;d=02\/03\/24%209:00%20AM&amp;aId=158642\">Sign in Pro here!<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5904&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2023\">SB 5904<\/a> would align timeframes for state financial aid programs with federal financial aid programs, reducing confusion for students and removing barriers to completing their degree. It received a hearing in Senate Ways &amp; Means but has not yet been scheduled for a vote.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=6254&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2023\">SB 6254<\/a> would expand college navigation and financial aid counseling for students.
