{"id":393,"date":"2021-05-04T19:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T19:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stand.org\/tennessee\/?p=393"},"modified":"2022-09-23T19:32:21","modified_gmt":"2022-09-23T19:32:21","slug":"check-and-connect-to-keep-freshmen-on-track","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stand.org\/tennessee\/blog\/check-and-connect-to-keep-freshmen-on-track\/","title":{"rendered":"Check and Connect to Keep Freshmen On Track"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Douglass High School is one of the partner schools in our&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/prod-s-ssl-1196207203.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com\/tennessee\/blog\/focus-freshmen-long-lasting-impact\">Memphis Freshman Success Network<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp; During the Q2 FSN convening, the Douglass team shared their unique system for keeping freshmen on track.&nbsp; Called \u201cCheck and Connect\u201d, the new system provides a framework for the Douglass Freshman Success Team to identify and champion specific ninth-graders to help them improve their grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check and Connect was created after the school guidance counselor and reset coordinator noticed an increased number of freshmen students with failing grades in two or more subjects due to the ongoing COVID pandemic.&nbsp; These and other at-risk students were assigned mentors from the administrative and teaching staff who then set up regular check-ins to determine the student\u2019s needs.&nbsp; The mentors work hard to build relationships with the students to help them reach their academic goals and also provide a sounding board for life in general.&nbsp; From hard copies of class assignments to extra-credit opportunities and even daily wake-up calls, mentors do whatever they can to assist the students in bringing up their grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once students are back on track \u2013 defined as having no more than one failing grade \u2013 students are removed from the priority list, and mentor check-ins move to a less frequent maintenance schedule.&nbsp; This system of one-on-one support has been instrumental in helping Douglass ninth-graders mitigate the effects of the pandemic and keep moving toward their dreams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Douglass High School is one of the partner schools in our&nbsp;Memphis Freshman Success Network.&nbsp; During the Q2 FSN convening, the Douglass team shared their unique system for keeping freshmen on track.&nbsp; Called \u201cCheck and Connect\u201d, the new system provides a framework for the Douglass Freshman Success Team to identify and champion specific ninth-graders to help [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":394,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"_coblocks_attr":"","_coblocks_dimensions":"","_coblocks_responsive_height":"","_coblocks_accordion_ie_support":"","color_schema":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-393","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-freshman-success-network"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.9 (Yoast SEO v27.9) -
