Its responsibilities are&nbsp;substantial.&nbsp;The board will guide decisions related to&nbsp;<strong>public education funding, facilities,&nbsp;accountability,&nbsp;and transportation citywide<\/strong>. This includes overseeing shared systems that affect both Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) and local charter schools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among its key duties, the IPEC board will:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Approve how education dollars are raised locally and&nbsp;determine&nbsp;when voters are asked to consider education funding proposals&nbsp;through a referendum.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oversee the management of school facilities and student transportation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Establish and approve a&nbsp;school performance framework and accountability system that&nbsp;includes all public schools within the IPS&nbsp;boundary.&nbsp;These&nbsp;decisions&nbsp;directly affect how schools&nbsp;operate, how students get to class, and how resources are shared across&nbsp;public schools.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-we-got-here-and-why-engagement-still-matters\"><strong>How We Got Here\u2014and Why Engagement Still Matters<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>IPEC exists because community members fought for it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents, educators, and advocates organized&nbsp;and&nbsp;pushed&nbsp;lawmakers to pass <a href=\"https:\/\/stand.org\/indiana\/our-stories\/stand-for-children-advocates-thank-state-lawmakers-for-passing-hb1423\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"2488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bill 1423<\/a>,&nbsp;which&nbsp;detailed the recommendations approved by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stand.org\/indiana\/our-stories\/why-the-ilea-matters-to-parents\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"2138\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indianapolis Local Education Alliance<\/a>&nbsp;(ILEA).&nbsp;Many of the ideas and goals&nbsp;that are now part of IPEC&nbsp;connect&nbsp;back to&nbsp;the work&nbsp;of Stand advocates and their&nbsp;vision for improving&nbsp;public education in IPS,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stand.org\/indiana\/our-stories\/parents-teachers-to-deliver-2000-signatures-to-mayor-ilea-to-showcase-broad-support-for-bold-changes-in-ips\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"2329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u201cTogether We Thrive.\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a>Stand parents and youth&nbsp;have&nbsp;long&nbsp;pushed for a new&nbsp;governance structure&nbsp;that is&nbsp;more coordinated, more&nbsp;equitable, and more accountable to the public.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now the opportunity is here to shape these ideas and policies through IPEC, and&nbsp;community voices must remain&nbsp;a key influencer throughout this process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-call-to-stay-engaged\"><strong>A Call to Stay Engaged<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As IPEC begins meeting,&nbsp;we\u2019re&nbsp;asking Indianapolis residents to recommit to this work by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/act.stand.org\/a\/ipec-pledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>signing the pledge to stay engaged<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By taking the pledge, community members commit to staying informed,&nbsp;participating&nbsp;when possible, and advocating for:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Transparency in decisions and finances&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Equitable opportunities&nbsp;for students in every neighborhood&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accountability for&nbsp;better student&nbsp;outcomes and&nbsp;the use of taxpayer&nbsp;investments&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Community\u2011centered, data\u2011driven decision\u2011making&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/act.stand.org\/a\/ipec-pledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This pledge <\/a>is a promise to stay involved not just today\u2014but throughout&nbsp;the many decisions still ahead.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-this-is-the-beginning-not-the-end-nbsp\"><strong>This Is the Beginning\u2014not the End<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We congratulate the new IPEC board members and recognize the responsibility&nbsp;they\u2019ve&nbsp;taken on.
