

{"id":2510,"date":"2026-03-11T14:17:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T14:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stand.org\/indiana\/?p=2510"},"modified":"2026-04-06T12:06:59","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T12:06:59","slug":"pink-collar-penalty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stand.org\/indiana\/our-stories\/pink-collar-penalty\/","title":{"rendered":"The Pink Collar Penalty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-nbsp-a-nbsp-pink-collar-job-nbsp\"><strong>What Is&nbsp;A&nbsp;Pink-Collar Job?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1967, William Jack Baumol&nbsp;coined the term \u201cpink-collar jobs\u201d to highlight the&nbsp;discrepancies&nbsp;faced by those working in industries historically&nbsp;associated with women.&nbsp;Pink-collar roles include nurses and medical assistants, administrative&nbsp;workers, cosmetologists,&nbsp;social workers,&nbsp;retail and customer service workers,&nbsp;and&nbsp;teachers.&nbsp;These roles span from office (or \u201cwhite collar\u201d) work to more&nbsp;physically&nbsp;intensive&nbsp;(or \u201cblue collar\u201d) work, but share a few key traits:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They have historically (and presently) been&nbsp;primarily&nbsp;staffed by women.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They face significant wage&nbsp;disparities&nbsp;compared to their&nbsp;white and blue collar&nbsp;counterparts.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They typically involve a&nbsp;significant&nbsp;amount of&nbsp;emotional labor and\/or service.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While some historically women-dominated jobs, such as&nbsp;tobacco manufacturing,&nbsp;are no longer primarily staffed by women, one&nbsp;of the pink-collar fields that has persisted for centuries&nbsp;is&nbsp;education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From daycare workers to&nbsp;classroom teachers to language pathologists, those working in education do&nbsp;the critical work of preparing future generations, while being met with the obstacles and&nbsp;inequities that those in all pink-collar industries face.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-are-public-school-teachers-nbsp\"><strong>Who Are Public School Teachers?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To give a quick layout of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/programs\/coe\/indicator\/clr\/public-school-teachers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the education landscape<\/a>,&nbsp;according to the National Center for Education Statistics,&nbsp;78% of&nbsp;public-school teachers are women.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That gender&nbsp;discrepancy&nbsp;skyrockets when you look at teachers of&nbsp;younger students.&nbsp;In 2022,&nbsp;97% of&nbsp;all&nbsp;preschool and&nbsp;kindergarten&nbsp;teachers&nbsp;were&nbsp;women.&nbsp;With this stark gender imbalance in the field, it is&nbsp;frustrating&nbsp;but unsurprising&nbsp;that&nbsp;there is a massive pay gap between teachers and other comparable industries.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-pink-collar-penalty-nbsp-nbsp\"><strong>The Pink-Collar Penalty&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most public-school teachers (58%)&nbsp;have a master\u2019s&nbsp;degree, but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/articles\/teachers-in-the-us-face-low-pay-relative-to-their-level-of-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their median pay<\/a>&nbsp;is&nbsp;nearly $20,000&nbsp;lower than other workers with an advanced degree.&nbsp;They are also paid significantly less than other government workers with similar education requirements&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, teachers are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/articles\/teachers-in-the-us-face-low-pay-relative-to-their-level-of-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paid less than the average employee<\/a>&nbsp;in every state in the U.S. besides Hawaii. When we consider that 98% of teachers have at least a&nbsp;bachelor\u2019s&nbsp;degree, compared to just 38.7% of&nbsp;all U.S. workers, the&nbsp;below average pay for teachers is even more jarring.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While teachers are making less than most workers of comparable educational attainment, they are expected to&nbsp;do significant amounts of emotional labor that&nbsp;goes&nbsp;far beyond their job descriptions.&nbsp;Many adults can share stories of when a teacher has stepped in to support them in massive ways, from providing emotional support during&nbsp;difficult times, to&nbsp;providing food and&nbsp;helping to secure resources for students from low-income backgrounds.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This support is being provided to an ever-increasing number of students as classroom sizes balloon, without the&nbsp;teacher&nbsp;workforce being increased to match.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time,&nbsp;they\u2019ve&nbsp;been thrown under the bus by&nbsp;bad&nbsp;faith actors using classrooms for political games. Teachers have faced extreme&nbsp;harassment for teaching&nbsp;accurate&nbsp;accounts of history, or about the theory of evolution.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teachers are not giving the training or resources to be doing this amount of&nbsp;psychological and social services support.&nbsp;It is no wonder that so many teachers report increased levels of anxiety and burnout\u2014something&nbsp;that\u2019s&nbsp;pushing many out of the field&nbsp;and further increasing the strain on those who stay.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Connecticut teacher,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/nea-today\/all-news-articles\/whats-causing-teacher-burnout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elsa Batista phrased it<\/a>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-pale-pink-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-79892004c5b4311573ec7b24bcf4b71b\"><strong>\u201cTeaching has become mentally,&nbsp;emotionally&nbsp;and physically exhausting. We are strong, resilient, and creative, but we need support; we need help in our classrooms. Right now,&nbsp;that\u2019s&nbsp;not happening, and we cannot afford to lose more teachers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-dark-orange-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3dce950fc858eeee791d367521d6c148 is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Teachers deserve to be paid fairly for their work, which is essential to the functioning of any society. They also must be provided with significantly more support, from classroom resources to mental health services.
