In Indianapolis, parents are raising their voices to demand solutions that make school choice real for everyone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Here are six powerful stories from advocates who know firsthand how transportation\u2014or the lack of it\u2014can shape a child\u2019s future.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udfa4 <strong>Cristal Salgado: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Pz-iMw6-AVg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u201cI had to pull my son from a school that was working.\u201d<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch this video from March 2025. In it, Cristal calls for collaboration between IPS and charter schools to ensure families like hers aren\u2019t left behind. As a single mom of two, Cristal found a charter school that helped her son thrive. But without transportation, the daily commute became overwhelming. After a year of trying to make it work, she had to withdraw him.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udfa4<strong> Ada Lemus: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/7ZyuGJKWYYA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u201cWithout transportation, my son could lose everything he\u2019s gained.\u201d<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this testimony from March 2025, Ada explains how her son is finally making progress with the help of an IEP and a supportive school. But that progress is fragile. Without a bus, she fears he\u2019ll lose access to the environment that\u2019s helping him succeed. Ada urges leaders to prioritize transportation so students can stay where they\u2019re thriving.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udfa4<strong> Sashah Fletcher: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R0_GwdNYCl8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u201cWe need to make it easier for families to choose what\u2019s best.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sashah testified at an IPS board meeting, sharing how transportation challenges limit real school choice. She believes families shouldn\u2019t have to choose between a great school and a manageable commute\u2014and that access should never depend on a parent\u2019s ability to drive across town.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udfa4<strong> Vilma Hernandez: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xGn-hiXnbhI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u201cFairness means access\u2014for everyone.\u201d<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vilma spoke directly to IPS leaders, advocating for inclusive access to all public schools, including charters. She emphasized that transportation is a matter of fairness and that no family should be excluded from opportunity because of where they live or how they get around.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udfa4 <strong>Dontia Dyson: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DzkgHunuBl0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u201cIf my son didn\u2019t have a bus, I couldn\u2019t get him to school.\u201d<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dontia is a single father of four, including an autistic son. He\u2019s currently without a driver\u2019s license due to insurance issues, and he knows firsthand how critical school transportation is. Without it, his children wouldn\u2019t be able to attend schools that meet their needs. He\u2019s calling for solutions that reflect the realities families face every day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udfa4<strong> Bryana Perdomo: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/W1aBy5O1mjs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>\u201cTransportation shouldn\u2019t be the reason a child misses out.\u201d<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bryana is a student who understands the impact of transportation barriers from a young person\u2019s perspective. She shared how difficult it can be for students to access the schools that are best for them when transportation isn\u2019t available.
