But what does that really mean\u2014and why does it matter so much?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At\u202f <strong>Stand Indiana<\/strong>, we believe accountability isn\u2019t about consequences or blame. It\u2019s about \u202f<strong>ensuring every student has access to a high-quality public education<\/strong>. That means identifying what\u2019s working, fixing what\u2019s not, and making decisions based on real data and student outcomes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\ud83d\udcca<\/strong><strong> What Accountability Looks Like<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accountability in education means having a\u202f<strong>clear, consistent system<\/strong>\u202fto measure school performance and take action when schools consistently underperform. It\u2019s about:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scaling up schools and programs that are proven to work<\/strong>, especially for underserved students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Phasing out or redesigning schools that continue to struggle<\/strong>, year after year.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Using data\u2014not politics\u2014to guide decisions <\/strong>\u202fthat impact students\u2019 futures.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\ud83e\udded<\/strong><strong> Why It Matters in Indianapolis<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here in Indianapolis, more than\u202f<strong>46,000 students<\/strong> are served across all public school types. Every one of those students deserves a school that helps them thrive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why Stand Indiana has long advocated for a plan to\u202f <strong>grow school models that are data-proven to improve outcomes for underserved students<\/strong>\u2014and to roll back those that aren\u2019t working, regardless of whether they\u2019re traditional or charter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accountability means asking hard questions\u2014and demanding better answers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stand.org\/indiana\/our-stories\/what-parents-are-really-asking-for-accountability-that-works\/\"><strong>\ud83d\udde3\ufe0f What Advocates Are Saying<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our community has spoken up again and again:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI want IPS schools that close the gap.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cOur children deserve an equitable education.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m asking IPS for proven schools.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Stand Indiana and our partners delivered a petition to IPS calling for a\u202f <strong>detailed plan to grow great schools<\/strong>. The board responded with resolution to reopen the innovation school application process\u2014unfortunately <strong>not a proactive plan to partner with high-performing schools<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stand.org\/indiana\/our-stories\/what-we-can-learn-from-denver-a-case-for-accountability-in-public-education\/\"><strong>\ud83d\udcda What the Research Shows<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/publicaffairs.ucdenver.edu\/docs\/librariesprovider36\/default-document-library\/denver-study-summary-september-2024.pdf?sfvrsn=60236bb4_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A University of Colorado study on Denver Public Schools<\/a> shows what is possible when districts make\u202f<strong>data-driven decisions grounded in an accountable system<\/strong>: student outcomes improve when quality is scaled, and low-performing schools are closed or restructured.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve also compiled our own data on the \u202f<strong>best-performing schools for children of color <\/strong>\u202fin Indianapolis. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2705<\/strong><strong> The Bottom Line<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accountability isn\u2019t a buzzword\u2014it\u2019s a \u202f<strong>lifeline<\/strong> \u202ffor students who have been underserved for far too long. If we want to build a truly fair education system, we must start with a \u202f<strong>shared definition of success<\/strong>\u202f and a\u202f <strong>clear plan to get there<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because every child deserves a school that works.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-background is-style-default\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About This Series: Understanding the Indianapolis Local Education Alliance (ILEA)<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, Indiana lawmakers passed House Bill 1515, establishing the <strong>Indianapolis Local Education Alliance (ILEA)<\/strong>\u2014a task force comprised of local leaders led by the mayor of Indianapolis with the goal of generating ideas to ensure IPS traditional schools and the charter sector are collaborating to improve student outcomes. The ILEA is not about choosing one type of school over another. It\u2019s about building a <strong>cohesive system of schools<\/strong>\u2014district, charter, and innovation\u2014that work together to deliver better outcomes for all students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This blog series explores the key policy areas that our advocates believe are essential to creating a high-performing, student-centered education system.
