Today we celebrate our right to read and double down on our effort to protect that freedom for the next generation. Our freedom to read depends on both access to books, and access to literacy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-blue-background-color has-background is-vertical is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ce155fab wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-black-color-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-ccd94b2a88159b55b5c5bd18b35e861b\"><strong>Share how your access to books and access to literacy made you the critical-thinking, informed, and empathetic human being you are today.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-a89b3969 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-font-size is-style-shadow has-medium-font-size\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-black-color-color has-white-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/vocalvideo.com\/c\/states-affiliates-IL-early-literacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Share Your Story<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-c20fa38e0605dfa22f1d924f76634f2c\">Both of those are being challenged.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-9a94d1167e0569848c65b04a8fca8e50\">The first \u2013 access to books \u2013 is overtly contested through orchestrated efforts to ban thought-provoking literature. Illinoisans are fortunate that our state policy leaders enacted a first-in-the-nation model law to stop book bans in public libraries. But that doesn\u2019t make local school boards immune from instituting their own book bans \u2013 like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/illinoiseagle.com\/2023\/10\/06\/complaint-filed-over-yorkville-school-board-removing-book-during-a-secret-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">J<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu-il.org\/en\/press-releases\/aclu-illinois-condemns-vote-yorkville-school-board-remove-civil-rights-book-high\"><em>ust Mercy <\/em>in Yorkville<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wqad.com\/article\/news\/education\/rowva-schools-book-ban-the-hate-u-give\/526-1c69484d-84fb-42af-875a-014d3078285f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Hate U <\/em>Give in ROWVA<\/a>, and numerous titles in Genoa-Kingston.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-ee97a3f0b87016b9c4899e9222577769\">The second \u2013 access to literacy \u2013 is a long-standing, systemic problem that leaves about one-third of Illinois\u2019 students reading below a Basic level. It\u2019s not the fault of any school board, parent, educator, or policymaker, but it is the social justice issue of our time and an absolute imperative to tackle \u2013 with all hands-on deck.
