As a compelling and growing body of research stacks up, a majority of U.S. states have enacted laws addressing cell phones in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\" style=\"line-height:2\">Research has increasingly pointed to the benefits of limiting student cell phone use in school:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Teens are spending an average of 8.5 hours a day using screen-based media. During the school day, they are spending <strong>an average of 1.5 hours on smartphones<\/strong> (1).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Of the time students spend on their cell phones during school hours, <strong>social media apps were the most common use at 32% of the time<\/strong> (2).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Research shows that high or increasing trajectories of addictive use of social media, mobile phones, or video games were common in early adolescents (5).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Excessive screen time is linked to <strong>poor educational and health outcomes in school-aged children<\/strong>. As parents who care deeply about protecting all children, we were surprised to learn that <strong>school safety experts <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolsecurity.org\/trends\/cell-phones-and-text-messaging-in-schools\/\">recommend that students not have phones<\/a> during a school emergency<\/strong>. Some storage options, like cell phone lockers and magnetic pouches, cost money. No student may be suspended, expelled, fined, or referred to law enforcement for violating the cell phone policy. We have heard growing concern that students use school-issued devices to continue the same distractions they access on their cell phones, and this is likely to be another frontier we need to work on.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sb2427-il-s-phone-free-school-law\">SB2427 \u2013 IL&#8217;s Phone-Free School lAW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ultimate-post-row ultp-block-5edf18\"><div class=\"ultp-row-wrapper\"><div class=\"ultp-row-content\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ultimate-post-column ultp-block-75ae25\"><div class=\"ultp-column-wrapper\">\n<p style=\"line-height:2\">Illinois is in a unique place because our phone-free school law (SB2427) has been adjusted to address some of the most pressing concerns for Illinoisans.
