We wanted to share a quick update on what happened, what we\u2019re hearing, and how it connects directly to our work on phone-free schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As shown below, CDAC will meet twice a month through April, and we will be present to keep the community informed on their progress:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>January 27, 2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>February 3, 2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>February 10, 2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>February 24, 2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>March 10, 2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>March 24, 2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>April 7, 2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who was at the table<\/strong><br>The committee brings together a broad range of voices: parents, educators, principals, mental health professionals, community advocates, and students. All are grappling with the same core question:&nbsp;<em>How do we create school environments where students can learn, connect, and thrive without constant digital distraction?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What the conversation focused on<\/strong><br>Committee members reviewed examples from other Colorado districts that have already implemented administrative cell phone policies, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bvsd.org\/about\/board-of-education\/policies\/policy\/~board\/j-policies\/post\/student-use-of-cell-phones-and-other-personal-technology-devices?sourceid=1134285&amp;emci=b4764020-5afc-f011-8d4c-0022482d279b&amp;emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&amp;ceid={{ContactsEmailID}}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BVSD<\/a>,&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adams12.org\/our-district\/search-policies\/policies\/~board\/5000-students\/post\/5030-student-use-of-cell-phones-and-other-personal-electronic-devices?sourceid=1134285&amp;emci=b4764020-5afc-f011-8d4c-0022482d279b&amp;emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&amp;ceid={{ContactsEmailID}}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adams 12<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/go.boarddocs.com\/co\/d11\/Board.nsf\/files\/D5RJV24E00F5\/$file\/JICJ%20Student%20Use%20of%20Cell%20Phones%20and%20PTD.pdf?sourceid=1134285&amp;emci=b4764020-5afc-f011-8d4c-0022482d279b&amp;emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&amp;ceid={{ContactsEmailID}}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Colorado Springs, D11<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.d51schools.org\/we-are-d5101\/student-use-of-personal-electronic-devices?sourceid=1134285&amp;emci=b4764020-5afc-f011-8d4c-0022482d279b&amp;emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&amp;ceid={{ContactsEmailID}}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mesa<\/a>. A few key themes came up repeatedly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clarity matters.<\/strong>&nbsp;Policies need simple, student-friendly language that clearly names which devices are covered and when they\u2019re restricted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bell-to-bell consistency.<\/strong>&nbsp;Many members emphasized that \u201call or nothing\u201d approaches are easier to understand and enforce, especially when phones are kept away for the full school day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The \u201cwhy\u201d is essential.<\/strong>&nbsp;Framing phone-free policies as a way to&nbsp;<em>protect student mental health, learning time, and social connection<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 not as punishment \u2014 resonated strongly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Age-appropriate supports.<\/strong>&nbsp;There was recognition that older students may need additional support, communication, and buy-in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emergency access.<\/strong>&nbsp;Families\u2019 concerns about emergencies were discussed, with an emphasis on clear, reliable school-based communication systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evidence-based policy.<\/strong>&nbsp;Committee members lifted up research showing improved focus, stronger social skills, and even higher student happiness and academic outcomes when phones are limited during the school day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s next<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>April 7:<\/strong>&nbsp;CDAC finalizes its recommendations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>April 15:<\/strong>&nbsp;Recommendations are presented to the DPS Board of Education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>April\u2013June:<\/strong>&nbsp;Policy drafting and refinement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also an opportunity for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSd9wXNcIGSyGY12mblYKwy-9z9rpj_kW8wIvtw438i8L9N_mA\/viewform?sourceid=1134285&amp;emci=b4764020-5afc-f011-8d4c-0022482d279b&amp;emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&amp;ceid={{ContactsEmailID}}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>public comment<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a>at upcoming meetings, with time set aside at the beginning for community voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why this matters for our work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything discussed reinforces what we\u2019ve been saying all along:&nbsp;<strong>bell-to-bell phone-free policies are an equity-centered, evidence-based investment in students.<\/strong>&nbsp;When phones are away all day, students get more learning time, stronger relationships, and healthier school cultures, and educators can focus on teaching instead of policing screens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll continue showing up, sharing research, and lifting up parent and educator voices to ensure DPS prioritizes students with the strongest policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you for staying engaged and standing with us as we advocate for school environments where students can truly be present.<\/p>\n\n\n<div  class=\"wp-block-ultimate-post-heading ultp-block-b9a25b\"><div class=\"ultp-block-wrapper\"><div class=\"ultp-heading-wrap ultp-heading-style9 ultp-heading-left\"><h2 class=\"ultp-heading-inner\"><span>More information and resources to learn more:<\/span><\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Phones Away.
