{"id":2250,"date":"2024-01-09T23:53:18","date_gmt":"2024-01-09T23:53:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stand.org\/colorado\/?p=2250"},"modified":"2024-01-10T18:00:04","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T18:00:04","slug":"policy-priority-keeping-families-connected-with-free-phone-calls-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stand.org\/colorado\/our-stories\/policy-priority-keeping-families-connected-with-free-phone-calls-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Policy Priority: Keeping Families Connected with Free Phone Calls"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Last year we championed, <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/hb23-1133?emci=a01a1ce9-46ce-ed11-a8e0-00224832e811&amp;emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&amp;ceid=&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HB23-1133,\u202fCost of Phone Calls for Persons in Custody<\/a> This bill was passed, making prison communication free across Colorado in state and private facilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, one of our top priorities is<a href=\"https:\/\/act.stand.org\/a\/keep-me-informed-how-advocate-free-phone-calls-colorado?=1134177\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> to ensure this policy can be implemented as planned by 2025<\/a> by protecting the ramped up funding needed to bring free prison phone calls to families. Over 50% of families with an incarcerated loved one struggle to meet basic housing and food needs. One out of three families with a loved one behind bars goes into debt just to stay in touch, and women carry 87% of the burden<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research has shown that keeping families connected while a loved one is incarcerated helps reduce recidivism.<strong> Now, it is critical that we protect the ramped-up funding needed to ensure this policy can be fully implemented.
