On behalf of the Washington team at Stand for Children, we are thrilled to introduce you to our new Executive Director, Kia C. Franklin. Rowing together, we have covered some distance in the tumult created by the pandemic. With Kia at the helm, momentum in Washington toward student access to high-quality school counseling services, racial equity in dual credit course enrollment, continued investment in 9th grade success programming, and reforms to criminal and youth justice systems will continue to accelerate. Kia’s passion and experience will guide Stand in Washington to new heights and greater achievement in service to every student.
Stand for Children Washington has endeavored to bring together like-minded alliances and develop bipartisan policies to best support students in every zip code in our state. Our team is confident that Kia’s leadership will lift us forward further, and with greater focus on the rights, needs, and promise of students whose boundless potential is overlooked and under-tapped because of their skin color, zip code, first language, or disability.
Kia’s most recent experience serving as the Chief Program Officer for Equal Opportunity Schools will bring a new layer of depth to our work together. Her knowledge of the data, programming, and policies that ensure students of color and low-income students are seen, heard, and supported within the education system is essential to building the equitable schools we are striving towards. As a former academic counselor with a background in law and youth development, Kia is dedicated to harnessing the power of community to create transformative change for students.
Kia joins us officially this week, and while our work together will be virtual for a while, we know nothing can keep us from meaningfully collaborating on what we all care about. You can expect to hear from Kia soon firsthand, and we hope you’ll join us in welcoming her aboard and in our excitement to move with purpose into 2021 and beyond.
