Top 3 Reasons Your Kids Should Take New Tests

Why are the new Smarter Balanced annual assessments so useful for you as a parent and your child? Here are three reasons why...

1. NEW ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT A ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS

Computer-based assessments actually adjust the difficulty of the questions based on the students' responses. A student who answers correctly will receive a more challenging question, while an incorrect answer will generate an easier question.

2. NEW SMARTER BALANCED ASSESSMENTS TEST MORE THAN JUST MEMORIZATION

Smarter Balanced Assessments challenge students to apply classroom knowledge to critical thinking and real world skills. These skills are essential as we prepare our children for successful high school graduation with an eye towards college or career. Check out a sample test to see for your self.

3. AS A PARENT, YOU WILL HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS FOR A SUCCESSFUL FUTURE

Smarter Balanced Assessments are given from 3rd grade through 8th, and again in either 10th or 11th grade; giving parents a strong sense of how their child is progressing early on. Parents can then get additional resources such as tutoring or after-school help for their child, as needed.

Washington has a thriving economy. By 2018, more than 70 percent of jobs in Washington will require a certificate or a post-secondary degree.

Will your student be ready?  Smarter Balanced Assessments are one of several tools parents have to identify the resources their child needs to succeed in their education and in life.
