2011 Elections

Working to recruit, elect, and protect pro-reform school board candidates in Seattle, Tacoma, and Spokane.  Stand developed a strong candidate endorsement process including surveys of members to identify the roles, priorities, and characteristics most important in the selection of a school board candidate; followed by candidate interviews and questionnaires focused on prioritizing community engagement and policies directed toward closing the achievement gap in Washington.

  • In Seattle, Stand for Children members made over 1,200 calls and wrote over 1,000 postcards in support of the endorsed candidates. In addition, Stand hosted a telephone town hall contacting over 40,000 Seattle voters and invited them to participate in a live conversation with Stand’s endorsed candidates for Seattle School Board and sent out a mailer to over 9000 households. The telephone town hall was a huge success with over 800 voters listening in and directly asking their questions of the candidates on a variety of issues including district accountability, teacher and principal leadership, educator professional development, special education and capacity issues. Two of Stand’s three endorsed candidates secured positions in the general election.
  • In Tacoma, Stand for Children members mobilized for meet-and-greets which raised $1,300 locally in support of our candidates, and put boots on the ground to contact more than 2,100 voters through canvassing and phone banks. In addition, Stand Tacoma sent direct mail to 10,000 voters and hosted a telephone town hall with more than 300 voters participating in a question and answer session with the candidates.  One of Stand for Children’s two endorsed candidates secured a position by more than 60% of the vote in the general election.
