About

Who we are

Stand for Children Washington is made up of volunteers in the community; parents, grandparents, teachers, administrators, concerned citizens – real people who care about our students, our public schools and our communities. Our members make a profound difference for children, while acquiring lifelong skills to become leaders in their own communities.

Our first chapter started in Oregon in 1999, and we have been working together for Washington's children and students since 2007. Our dedicated members and leaders are the driving force behind everything we do.

A survey of our supporters in December 2011 found that:

  • 20% are members of a union or have a family member who is
  • 28% are current or former educators
  • 50% are active in community organizations such as the PTA, NAACP, and church groups
  • 62% are a parent or grandparent of a public school student

All of our supporters care deeply about making a difference for students in Washington, and all want to create a better world for our children.

Funding

Stand for Children Washington operates both a 501(c)(4) nonprofit advocacy organization and a 501(c)(3) charitable organization (the Stand for Children Leadership Center) with a combined budget of $1.2 million. Only 13 cents of every dollar donated is spent on administration. We receive generous support from community foundations and from individual members and donors like you.

Our 501(c)(3) Leadership Center receives about 30 percent of its leadership center funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and 70 percent from individual donors.

Our 501(c)(4) advocacy organization, which works on legislation and elections, is entirely 100 percent funded by members and individual donors.
