Funding restored to Governor’s Office of Children’s Care Coordination!
Tennessee Stand for Children has been a long-time advocate for early intervention services and other vital programs that ensure school readiness. Together, we have made our voices heard in the halls of the State Legislature yet again!
Thank you to all the Tennesseans who responded to our action alert on the proposed amendment that would eliminate funding for the Governor’s Office of Children’s Care Coordination (GOCCC). We’re excited to report that funding to the GOCCC has been restored, and all the vital programs funded by the GOCCC, including Infant Mortality Reduction, the Women’s Health Initiative, and the Centers of Excellence (COE) for Children in State Custody, will continue. This will allow the state to continue to work not only to control healthcare costs, but also to improve birth outcomes and the well-being of Tennessee’s smallest and most fragile citizens.
Tennessee wins Race to the Top!
We won! Out of 41 states that applied and 16 finalists, Tennessee is one of two winners in Race to the Top. That means our state will receive up to $502 million to support improvements in public education.
Stand for Children is thrilled with this news and would like to thank 8,000 Tennesseans who signed our First to the Top and Win the Race petitions, stood up for kids, and rallied behind the state to win. Race to the Top is the Obama administration’s $4.3 billion federal grant program aimed at encouraging states to innovate and improve public education. Tennessee’s share of the grant will help support historic changes in our children’s schools and position our state as a national leader in public education.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said that Tennessee and Delaware are the winners, presenting the strongest applications and edging out Georgia, Florida and a dozen other finalists in this first round of Race to the Top.
