Notes from the Field: Hitting the streets for Houston kids!


This Saturday, a group of volunteers hit the streets with me in Houston's Third Ward, Sunnyside, and South Park neighborhoods to gather signatures for our petition to the Houston school board!

Braving the blazing sun, volunteers knocked on doors, spoke to fellow Houston residents, and gathered over 100 signatures encouraging the HISD school board to put a bond measure on the ballot in 2012. Learn more.

Houston: What's Happening with the Budget


Houston, like all cities and district in Texas, is grappling with massive budget cuts. As a parent or community member, it can be difficult to find good information on what's happening and how it will impact your child.

That's why we're pleased to see that HISD has created a comprehensive section on their website explaining where HISD schools stand, how it relates to the state budget crisis, and how you can follow and give input during the budget process. Many materials are available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Tracking STAAR


Testing in Texas is a hot topic these days, with Commissioner Robert Scott making fiery comments and deferring implementation of the new 15% grading requirement connected to the new STAAR end-of-course examinations. While Stand hasn't yet taken a formal position, we're tracking the issue, and do support efforts to ensure schools are held accountable for results without creating an over-emphasis on standardized testing.
