I exemplify this mission by my daily emphasis on college readiness. Despite the fact that my scholars are in the 4th grade, I ensure that they leave my classroom not only knowing the content required, but also that they are able to articulate the college they want to attend, why they have chosen that college, and the steps required to get there. End of Year College and Career pathway project: Last year, I along with my 4th grade team, put together a career unit that took place after STAAR testing was complete. We invited speakers to come in from a variety of different careers and speak to our scholars about what skills they developed in school that help them in their jobs today. The scholars then created a personalized “Life” game board in which they researched and then designed their path to the college and career of their choice. They included a step for each grade level from 5th grade, through middle, and into high school that included the tests they will be expected to pass in each grade level, a layout of what AP classes they should take in high school, PSAT, SAT, and when they should begin visiting and applying to colleges. They even researched what post-graduate education the careers of their choice would require. I incorporate this concept of “the road to college” by using the image of a staircase that we are climbing up each day that will lead us up to dream colleges and jobs.
