The Stand for Children Endorsement Committee has been gathering over the past several months to make a choice on who will get recommendations for the Stand for Children endorsement for the Shelby County School Board elections on August 2nd, 2012. This group of dedicated leaders has taken their responsibility seriously. Each committee member put in preparation long before decision time. Last night, Memphis Stand for Children Director Mark Sturgis accepted Leadership Memphis’ 2012 Community Champion of the Year Award.

It is truly an honor to be recognized by our community for our efforts and, as a grassroots organization, we know that the impact on the community was the result of committed Stand members.  Sturgis says, “The award was accepted on behalf of our staff and members. It is because of their hard work that we were able to make, and will continue to make, an impact on public education in Memphis.”

This week, Stand and other parent leadership groups from the county met with the Transition Planning Commission to give feedback around the TPC’s educational priorities for the merger.

Beating Down the Block: Get in Where You Fit In and Help Out


First I would like to apologize to my faithful readers.  I had problems with my computer last week and was unable to post.  Now that we got that out of the way, I'm back on the block giving and getting the information we need to ensure the community is educated and ready to elect the best candidates to the new school system.

Memphis Membership Celebrates Wins, Makes Plans for the Future


Our Memphis membership rallied together last Saturday night, March 24th, to celebrate our wins in public education. Over a hundred members came to see an inspiring presentation on the future of education and education advocacy from our Stand staff, Memphis Stand leadership committees, and Memphis Mayor AC Wharton.
