Representative Mark Johnson, House District 52
Why we endorsed Representative Mark Johnson
“Mark Johnson puts aside politics and does what’s best for kids. He co-sponsored the Oregon Promise, providing high school students an affordable path to community college. He worked on common-sense reforms to get more money in local classrooms. And he’s advocated for better information on student achievement, so parents have an understanding of what’s happening in schools. Oregon education advocates want this six-year veteran legislator back for another term, fighting for our kids!” -Toya Fick, Executive Director of Stand for Children Oregon
Hood River County residents trust Rep. Johnson. He has repeatedly proven his leadership skills and integrity. He has been elected to the Hood River County School board three times, has been elected to the legislature three times, and has operated a small business for over 25 years.
Johnson advocates for policy to improve literacy by the third grade, a proven tactic to improve student success and high school graduation rates. In 2017, he plans on introducing legislation to this effect.
In order to preserve the important work happening at the elementary school levels, Rep. Mark Johnson supports Measure 98, the ballot measure that will improve high school graduation rates by expanding career technical education, college prep classes and dropout prevention strategies in Oregon high schools. He will be fundamental in the successful implementation of this ballot measure, making sure these vital programs reach the classroom and truly make a difference for our kids.
Mark grew up attending public school in Hood River county, and his three children graduated from Hood River High School. He is devoted to Hood River schools and Oregon’s public school system.
