Senator Mark Hass, Senate District 14
Senator Mark Hass is such an important advocate in Salem that we had to call him out twice on the 2015-16 Legislative Scorecard. Not only did he play a leadership role on Stand’s priority initiatives in the past two legislative sessions, he was also one of the few legislators who scored 100 percent on the scorecard.
Why we endorsed Senator Mark Hass
Sen. Hass takes on critical issues for Oregon students, like dual-credit options for high school students, increasing summer learning opportunities and tax reform. He wants Oregon schools to have stable, adequate funding, and, as Chair of the Senate Finance and Revenue Committee, he works hard to make sure funding goes to the programs proven to have the biggest and the best impact in Oregon classrooms.
Sen. Hass was instrumental in developing the concept for the Oregon Promise -- ensuring community college is free for Oregon high school graduates -- and worked hard to ensure its passage in 2015. His first bill passed into law (HB2421)—while he was on the house side--created tax incentives for businesses to set up college scholarship programs for their employees.
His priority in the legislature has been trying to reform Oregon’s tax structure so that it is less volatile and more stable. He is perhaps best known as a leader in education policy, authoring Oregon’s full day kindergarten bills, and he's also a member of the Senate Education Committee.
