Janeen Sollman, House District 30
With Rep. Gallegos’ retirement, we lose a fierce advocate for quality programs for English learners and for reducing Oregon’s critically high absenteeism rates. Janeen Sollman promises to continue his legacy and adds a passion for improving third grade reading. In her questionnaire, she enthusiastically writes: “Study after study shows that early intervention and early reading support is directly connected to improved graduation rates.”
Why we endorsed Janeen Sollman
As a member of the Hillsboro School Board, Janeen has a proven track record of putting kids first and involving community to make sure each child’s needs are met. She has served as a Hillsboro School Board member since 2009, and as board chair from 2011-13. In her tenure she organized a bipartisan education town hall with legislators, brought Hillsboro parents and students to lobby for schools in Salem, and improved communication between parents and the district.
Most importantly, Janeen cares deeply about improving Oregon’s high school graduation rate – one of the worst in the country – so more children have the opportunity to achieve their dreams. She endorsed Measure 98 to expand programs proven to raise both the graduation rate and success rates after high school. We expect she will be a champion in the successful implementation of this ballot measure, making sure these vital programs reach the classroom and truly make a difference for our kids.
