Representative Gene Whisnant, House District 53
Unfortunately, only 51 percent of English learners in our state graduate from high school on time. Due in large part to the leadership of Rep. Whisnant, in partnership with Rep. Gallegos, unprecedented legislation to improve opportunities and outcomes for Oregon’s English learners was passed unanimously in the legislature.
Why we endorsed Rep. Gene Whisnant
Rep. Whisnant is a tireless advocate for English learners and for children living in poverty. He advocates for transparent spending of education funding, so parents and advocates can be sure dollars are spent on the programs that will make the biggest difference in the lives of our students.
In order to preserve and expand upon this important work, Rep. Whisnant supports Measure 98, the ballot measure that will improve high school graduation rates by expanding career technical education, college prep classes and dropout prevention strategies in Oregon high schools. He will be fundamental in the successful implementation of this ballot measure, making sure these vital programs reach the classroom and truly make a difference for our kids.
Rep. Whisnant was extraordinarily welcoming to our Spanish-speaking members with kids in English learner programs, and he carried their stories with him as he advocated for passage of English learner legislation. He is also a member of the Joint Ways and Means Committee.
