Stand’s Beat the Odds scholarship program is more than a chance for you to connect with our work and an opportunity for deserving students to achieve their dreams of higher education.

Over the years, Beat the Odds has become a family of incredible students and the generous people like you who are committed to their success. We watch these students grow, learn, take on tremendous challenges and have an incredible impact on their communities around them.

In this season of caps and gowns, we wanted to share what many familiar Beat the Odds faces are up to now.

Past Scholars

Charis Roberts
Charis overcame homelessness and succeeded in school despite becoming independent by age 15. Through the Beat the Odds scholarship, they attended Reed college and just earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. Charis has a job with the Reed chemistry department, and plans to work for a year before applying for graduate programs.

Mustaf Mohamed

Mustaf spent the first 11 years of his life in a refugee camp in Kenya without electricity or stable access to food. Mustaf used his Beat the Odds scholarship to attend the University of Portland, where he just completed a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He is now off to Portland State University to pursue a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering with a focus on wet water infrastructure.

Alex Ruiz

Alex became a Beat the Odds scholar after spending his childhood split between his parents in rural Mexico and his brother living in Oregon. Alex missed his parents desperately, but watching them fight for everything they had taught him the importance of a quality education. Alex just earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Oregon State University, and is preparing to move to Seattle for his first job out of college.

Isaiah Eddington

When we met Isaiah, he was working hard to be a role model for his younger half-brother despite growing up in poverty and tumultuous circumstances at home. Thanks to his Beat the Odds scholarship, Isaiah attended Oregon State University where he made the jump from studying business to nursing. He is now becoming a certified nursing assistant at Linn Benton Community College, and doing a summer internship at Providence St. Vincent.
