We’ve known for years that Oregon’s high school graduation rates were among the worst in the nation. Today, we were served a clear reminder that those grad rates really, truly, are that bad.
As Oregonians, we never settle for second best. We serve the best coffee, the best beer, and have the best college football team (most years). Where are our priorities? When it comes to the education of our children, why do we settle for 47th best?
The facts are incredibly stark. Our graduation rates are so far below national average – nearly 10 points – it clearly signals we are not supporting our students enough on their path to a diploma. We’ve run out of excuses. Other states are not cheating. Simply put, Oregon must do better by our students.
