About Beat the Odds
The Beat the Odds Scholarship program was started in 2007 to highlight the incredible potential of Oregon's young people as well as the challenges which prevent too many of them from succeeding.
One in three Oregon children fail to graduate from high school and nearly 40 percent of grads do not go to college at a time when the overwhelming majority of new jobs require a college degree.
Lesa Bowman-Harris, mother of Beat the Odds recipient Quincy Harris, says:
“Not only did the Beat the Odds scholarship give my son the confidence that a college education was in his grasps, but it also showed my other two children that they can do it too. Quincy, with the help of Stand for Children, has blazed a trail for his family and friends to further their education.”
The Beat the Odds Scholarship is for students who will feel empowered by telling their story. Recipients agree to participate in the creation of an inspirational video and participate in all related publicity. Stand for Children hosts a fundraising luncheon in Portland each year, and a reception in Eugene. The recipients accept their scholarships and speak at these events. Meet our Beat the Odds alumni.
Thank you to our sponsors!
Beat the Odds would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, who are committed to investing in students and supporting them as they chase their dreams.
