Tulsa City Director Melissa Abdo was featured by several Tulsa news media on the topic of the value of summer school and students avoiding what is called the "summer slide."
In this video report, we learn that "half the battle really is just getting the kids [to summer school]," according to Chris Payne of Tulsa Public Schools. "Last year we had about 1,200 at risk kids at risk of not being promoted to the 4th grade and half of the ones that were eligible did not go to summer school," he said. To help boost attendance this year..."
That is why Stand for Children Oklahoma is committed to building awareness and sending Tulsa parents informational materials about summer slide. Stand also will be canvassing neighborhoods and is committed to helping TPS improve its attendance rates. "We are explaining to [parents] what summer learning loss is, how it can impact their child," Abdo said in the report.
