  • Jonah Edelman

    Jonah is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Stand for Children, a growing and influential political voice for students. Jonah hails from a family of civil rights leaders – his mother, Marian Wright Edelman, was the first African American woman admitted to the Mississippi bar and his father, Peter Edelman, was a close aide to Robert F. Kennedy. In 1996 Jonah was a key organizer of Stand for Children's historic founding rally in Washington, DC. At 300,000 attendees, it was the largest rally for children in American history. Jonah was recognized on Time.com as one of the nation’s top education activists in 2011.
  • Luis Avila

    Luis grew up in Mexico, and graduated from Arizona State University with a B.A. in Communications and Spanish. He received an award from the “40 Hispanic Leaders Under 40” for his continuous work in the defense of immigrant rights in 2009, and in 2011 he served as president of the Somos America Coalition, the largest immigrant-rights coalition in Arizona. He has a background in journalism, radio production, public relations and political campaigns. One of his hobbies is producing radio and acting and directing in theater productions. Luis also leads the Isac Amaya Foundation, an organization focused on raising funds to provide scholarships to students who want to continue their higher education and do not receive financial aid.
  • Jennifer Ayuyu

    Jennifer was born and raised in one of the poorest pockets of the Portland metro area. Thanks to her determination and the unwavering support from her loving family, she went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Oregon State University with a degree in business administration and accounting. She has worked with Stand for 7+ years. Jennifer lives in Portland with her husband and two young children.
  • Carol Bialostosky

    Carol grew up in the Portland, Oregon, area and is a graduate of Marylhurst University with a degree in Business Management. She comes from a family of innovative educators and her father was a founding member of Metropolitan Learning Center, the first “alternative” school in the Portland Public School District. She spent 17 years in Austin, Texas working in the semiconductor and telecommunications industries and running her own Christmas tree farm. She joined the Stand staff in 2010 as a member of the National Finance Team, where she processes payroll, provides finance training for new hires, and supports Stand’s multiple state locations.
  • Rob Bowen

    Rob grew up in Detroit and is primarily self-taught in Management, Database Systems, Information Technology, and Programming. Prior to joining Stand in 2010, Rob worked for an Academy Award-winning Visual Effects studio making movies and video games. In addition, Rob has worked as a professional chef, Head of Human Resources, Executive Producer, and as a teacher at the college level. As Director of Systems & Engineering at Stand, Rob is responsible for all infrastructure and systems at Stand (phones, networks, computers), as well as custom development and engineering for individual Stand teams and states.
  • Jolea Bryant

    Jolea was born and raised in the Houston area, and is a proud product of the Houston public school system. She graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Public Policy, and later received her M.S. in Public Policy from the same institution. While in school, Jolea began working for a community-based, nonprofit organization that focused on bringing awareness to and addressing environmental justice issues in northwest and southwest Atlanta. This opportunity was the beginning of what would become a lifelong journey of working for and with community-based organizations. In 2009, Jolea moved back to Houston where she began working for the City managing their workforce development and digital inclusion programs. Jolea transitioned to the Stand team in 2013, and currently works to support network-wide development initiatives and develop systems and processes that will enable national programs to be successfully funded. Jolea spends her “spare” time working on the youth and women’s ministries at her church, and volunteering at organizations such as United Way of Greater Houston, Dress for Success, and Literacy Advance of Houston. She also enjoys trying new foods, singing and dancing in the mirror, reading, and traveling.

  • Brendan Burns

    Brendan grew up in Colorado where he attended Colorado State University and studied Political Science. He spent the last decade helping organizations like the Alzheimer’s Association, LIVESTRONG and the American Heart Association achieve success in online advocacy and social media. Brendan leads our national online campaigns operation, which is looking to leverage the collective voices of education advocates from across the country to impact change. A father of two children who are in elementary school, he is passionate about providing an opportunity for all children to have equal access to education in this country.
  • Simone Coker

    Simone, a navy brat with an arts background, earned her B.F.A. at Michigan State University and her M.A. in Arts Administration from the University of Oregon. Simone has always been attracted to non-profits and community based organizations, in both the volunteer and employee capacities. She comes to Portland by way of Austin, Texas, where she worked in galleries and plant nurseries and volunteered with local arts groups. In her free time Simone volunteers with RACC’s ArtSpark program, doing outreach and event work.
  • Crystal Combs

    Crystal grew up in Oregon and California, and holds a B.A. in Spanish Language Literature from University of California Santa Cruz and an M.B.A. from ESADE Business School in Barcelona. Prior to joining Stand in 2009, she worked in education in Boston, Massachusetts, for six years where she ran all aspects of a small tutoring center before ultimately pursuing an M.B.A. in Spain. In her role as National Trainer/Recruiter she creates various trainings for members of staff across the organization and recruits for members of our national teams.

    Prior to joining Stand, Kerry served as the National Recruitment Manager at Jumpstart, a national non-profit organization focused on building language, literacy, social and emotional skills in preschool children to ensure that every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Before joining Jumpstart, Kerry worked at the Center for Community Solutions (CCS) based out of San Diego, California, where she was responsible for the design and execution of all trainings for staff and volunteers affiliated with CCS. Kerry holds a bachelor’s degree in public relations from the University of Georgia and a master’s degree in international social development from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
  • Susie Crafton

    Susie grew up in Michigan, but has lived in Texas for the past 10 years. Before coming to Stand, Susie raised $57 million for IDEA Public Schools, a network of high performing charter schools, allowing them to grow from 6 schools to 28 schools. At IDEA she also worked with their board of directors to add a multi-regional governance structure and launched support services to increase college persistence of IDEA’s high school graduates. Prior to that, Susie was project manager for Center for Reform of School Systems from 2005 to 2009 where she managed an intensive training and consulting program for select public school boards to learn how to reform large urban districts through governance. Susie has also held leadership positions in the private sector and in higher education administration. Susie earned both her Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts in Student Affairs Administration from Michigan State University. Susie lives in Houston, Texas with her husband Clay, her two sons, Ian and Zane, and her four small dogs, Benny, Ellie, Chuy, and Howie.
  • Amanda Crowley

    A lifelong Massachusetts resident, Amanda is a graduate of Boston College Lynch School of Education and Harvard Graduate School of Education. Prior to joining Stand, Amanda worked to build and scale up the Boston Education Pioneers Fellowship program, which selects and develops graduate school students from multiple disciplines to work on our nation's most critical urban education issues. Amanda has also spent time in the classroom, teaching 3 and 4 year-old children at a preschool outside of Boston.
  • Kara Dahl

    Kara was born and raised in Salem, Oregon, and is a 2006 graduate of the University of Oregon with bachelor’s degrees in both accounting and political science. Upon graduation Kara moved to Rwanda to intern for Columbia University’s Access project. During her time there she implemented computer-based accounting systems for more than 20 rural health centers and conducted training with their staff in the areas of budgeting, financial reporting, and asset management. After completing her internship and consultancy, Kara stayed in Rwanda to launch an artistic café and cultural event venue. Kara joined the Stand team in 2010.
  • Adam Fitzpatrick

    Adam was born and raised in Redding, California, and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He spent several years in business for himself as a Realtor and then as a financial advisor, where he worked to institute workplace programs providing financial literacy education and promoting the concept of financial wellness. He currently works part time with Stand while attending Portland State University towards a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a member of the National Finance Team, he handles much of the regulatory reporting required for our staff lobbyists and political action committees, maintains business licenses and tax exemptions, and helps staff with credit card and expense reporting.
  • Jackie Hanselmann Sergi

    Jackie grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, and is a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne University, where she majored in Communications and minored in Education. Prior to joining Stand in 2011, she focused on building talent and leadership pipelines for education endeavors. She served as Director of Talent Sourcing at The K12 Search Group, Manager of National Recruitment at Education Pioneers, and Program Coordinator for the National Leadership Development team at The Broad Foundation. As the National Program Director, Jackie collaborates with Stand leadership to establish a year-one organizing and campaign strategy for the new state affiliate, supports the implementation of that strategy until the affiliate is self-sustaining, and manages the overall launch process of new state affiliates.

    Karen grew up in the Northeast and went on to major in Business at the University of New Hampshire. After graduating Karen lived on Nantucket, supervising two hotel properties, before settling in Boston and transitioning to a travel technology company. Throughout the years, she progressed in her career to become a holistic talent management professional as a Director of Human Resources and Learning & Development. Craving a change from the corporate world, she chose Stand for Children as her way of linking her personal passion and her professional career.

    Meet Nancy, the face behind the admin mailbox. A native Portlander, Nancy came to Stand as a temp, and was made permanently part of staff in July 2011. She loves living in Portland and knows that, if she tires of the rain, she can visit her grandkids on the dry side of the mountains. She does volunteer work at an organization called Community Warehouse, she loves to read, garden, and shop estate sales.

    Amy studied Political Science and Sociology at the University of Oregon, where she was also involved with various state and federal political campaigns and student government. Amy grew up in Roseburg, Oregon, where she experienced first-hand the toll a low-income city can have on its children and became personally invested in improving education for all. Before coming to Stand, Amy worked in the for-profit insurance industry, and volunteered with various social organizations such as Planned Parenthood and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Amy started working with Stand in December of 2009.
  • Jan Johnson

    Jan grew up in Florida, finished high school and started college in California, and got to Texas as soon as she could. Since then, she has spent 14 years in Houston public schools as a teacher, technology coordinator, grants coordinator, assistant principal, and dean of instruction before leaving in 2002 to start her own grant writing, training, and consulting firm. In the past ten years, she has won over $126 million for public and charter school, district, and nonprofit clients all over the United States, including two of the 49 Investing in Innovation (i3) grants in 2010. Jan holds a B.S. in Elementary Education, an M. Ed. in Educational Administration, and two lifetime Texas teacher certifications, but her real super power (along with getting really great parking) is turning words into money, so she's sticking with grant writing for now. As National Grants Director, Jan will work to build development capacity across all Stand sites while also writing grants to support our national operations.

    Born and raised in North Carolina, Leslie attended Elon University and graduated with a B.A. in corporate communications and a minor in business administration. Throughout college, Leslie volunteered as a substitute teacher for a local children’s home. After college, Leslie worked with at-risk pregnant youth for Florence Crittenton Services in Charlotte, which strengthened her understanding of the public school system and its impact. She joined the Stand team in 2008, where she facilitates agile project management within the Information Team.

    Laura grew up in Las Vegas and developed a passion for education from her parents, both lifelong public school teachers. After completing a B.S. and an M.A. in Communication from Arizona State University, Laura worked in marketing and sales leadership roles for an educational travel company. As the National Marketing Director, Laura guides the strategy for online outreach initiatives, oversees the communication process with our dedicated members, and supports our state affiliates.

    Sarah grew up in Connecticut, and attended Pomona College in Claremont, California, where she graduated with a degree in Anthropology. She has extensive experience recruiting and mobilizing organizers for campaigns, including work with Grassroots Campaign and as a field organizer for Moveon.org. Sarah joined the staff of Stand for Children in the beginning of 2010 as the National Recruiter. Her goal is to apply her political campaign experience and recruiting background to accomplishing the crucial mission of making sure all children have the support they need to thrive.

    Adria, born in El Paso, Texas, was raised immersed in the culturally enriching lifestyle of bordering cities, by a strong family whose main values were education and community involvement. After completing her basic education in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, El Paso, Texas, and Randers, Denmark as a foreign exchange student, Adria graduated magna cum laude from Arizona State University with a B.S. in housing and community development and a minor in design studies. Her professional experience includes international project management across multiple industries, as well as advocacy work as VP for AIESEC - Ciudad Juarez, an international organization focused on youth leadership development. In her current role, she coordinates social media presence, manages visual brand projects, supports the state communications directors, and leads bilingual communications.
  • Thérèse McKinny-Wood

    A native of upstate New York, Thérèse McKinny-Wood graduated from the University of Delaware. While a Teach For America teacher in the Mississippi Delta, Thérèse co-founded an organization called the Delta Initiative for Cultural Exchange that focused on providing Delta students with the opportunity to experience new cultures first hand. She lead two student programs to Honduras, then moved to rural Honduras to study educational resilience in disadvantaged communities through a Fulbright grant. Thérèse joined the Stand team in January of 2011, after earning her M.P.A. from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.

    Rich spent much of his youth in Kentucky. He has extensive experience scoping and delivering web based products and services as well as a deep background in engineering and sales, with industry experience in semiconductors, telecommunications, e-learning, medical devices, publishing, and marketing communications. As CRM Product Owner he is responsible for discovering and prioritizing technology work across the organization to deliver efficient systems and services into Stand’s national and state offices, implementing scalable software to fuel tomorrow’s growth plan. He lives in Portland with his two kids, Jackson and Addie.

    A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Will earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan, with double majors in History and English. Upon graduating, he was accepted into the one-year MATCH Corps program, working at a no-excuses public charter middle school in Boston. In addition, Will has worked, through Tutors For All, to coordinate a Saturday MCAS preparatory tutorial program at Codman Academy in Dorchester. Prior to joining Stand in 2012, he was serving as Operations Manager at one of the state’s highest-performing middle schools, Excel Academy Charter School in East Boston.

    Growing up in a suburb of Portland, Kelsey graduated magna cum laude from Portland State University with a B.S. in social studies, sociology and women’s studies. With dreams to be a counselor, she began her career in direct services at a women’s crisis hotline. By chance, Kelsey landed a part-time role at the organization in the development program to make ends meet, and quickly realized her passion for marketing and fundraising. She eventually transitioned from direct service work to supporting programs as a full-time marketer/fundraiser and non-profit event planner. Kelsey moved into the education arena at a fast-growing organization that supports low-income students in school and college, where she managed communications and partnerships with corporations. Kelsey also gives her time to organizations like NW Classical Ballet, Women for Success Portland and SMART.. In her current role, she manages the national Common Core State Standards campaign, and supports states as the new standards are implemented.

    As our National Campaigns Director, Christian works to strengthen our candidate and electoral work by developing and implementing an organization-wide, systematic approach to candidate cultivation, recruitment, endorsement and education about what works to improve educational outcomes. Christian has spent most of her professional career advancing causes that empower the next generation of leaders and defend our nation's most vulnerable citizens. Her passion for social justice work comes from a deep rooted belief in inclusiveness, acceptance, and the power of ordinary citizens to shape the world around them.

    Jenny grew up in the Midwest and graduated with a B.A. in English from the University of Kansas. After gaining extensive HR experience at another nonprofit, Jenny joined the Stand team in 2010 after watching her nephew try to navigate the Portland school system. As a member of the Talent Team, Jenny oversees employee relations, employment law and compliance, total rewards, and other HR related initiatives. She also collaborates with her team members to further expand organizational priorities focused on organizational and people development.

    Elizabeth grew up in Washington. She holds a master’s degree in management, and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and philosophy. Elizabeth has also earned several professional designations including Project Management Professional (PMP), Business Process Management (BPM), Six Sigma White Belt, and Certified Salesforce Administrator. She is a highly effective project manager with several years’ experience planning, leading, and executing cross-functional projects, and also has experience with process improvement, operations and data analysis. Elizabeth joined Stand in March 2013 as a Project Manager for the Info Team.
  • Dean Roberts

    Dean is a native Oregonian and a graduate of Lewis & Clark College in Portland, where he majored in Accounting. Prior to joining Stand in 2010, he was the CFO for Planned Parenthood’s affiliate headquartered in Portland, where he was in charge of all aspects of finance and accounting, as well as IT, HR and employee benefits, purchasing and distribution, project management and facilities. Prior to his employment with Planned Parenthood, he spent twelve years as a CPA in public accounting, and a number of years in the private sector. As a staff accountant for Stand, Dean is responsible for general ledger accounting and financial reporting, and more generally for supporting the work of the Finance Managers and the CFO.

    Lindsey originally hails from Anchorage, Alaska, and is a proud graduate of the University of Oregon, with a degree in Journalism. Prior to joining Stand for Children in 2011, Lindsey served as an Executive Assistant in various realms of the education industry. She is now the Executive Assistant for Stand for Children’s CEO, Jonah Edelman. Lindsey is the mother of two daughters, Lily and Kate, who both attend Portland Public schools.

    Scott has had a fascination with technology since his first introduction to computers in the 1st grade. After completing an Electrical Engineering degree at the University of Hawaii, he continued his passion for computing by leading e-commerce deployments for apparel companies such as Guess Jeans, Speedo and lucy activewear. Most recently he has been a CTO at numerous innovative start-up companies. Scott has been on the board for the Portland chapter of the Project Management Institute and currently provides technical assistance to Living Yoga, a non-profit outreach program focused on bringing yoga to prisons, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers and disadvantaged youth.

    Leslie was born and raised in Kettering, Ohio. After graduating with honors from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a degree in accounting, she moved to Chicago where she held a number of staff and management positions in the finance arena with Fortune 500 companies. In October 2007 she and her husband, along with their three rescued stray cats, moved to Portland to make a life change. Positions in Portland in the education field led her to Stand for Children, and she is thrilled to now be a part of an organization that is making a difference in the lives of children.

    Tyler Whitmire has been with Stand for five years. In her last role Tyler developed and launched Stand University for Parents (Stand UP), Stand’s ten-week program to help low income elementary school parents become more involved in their children’s academics.
