Alfonso came to the U.S. from Mexico at age 15 by himself to pursue his dream of becoming a computer engineer. He balances high school with work to pay rent and send money back to his parents.
Christina witnessed extreme violence before she and her family fled Syria to escape the escalating threat of ISIS. She saw surgeons save lives, and now she wants to become one.
Jose grew up dreaming of becoming a professional soccer player, but became stricken with a rare illness that put him in a wheelchair. Now his goal is to study computer science and score a job at Nike or Microsoft.
Despite the different hardships, turmoil, and heartache these teens have faced, they share this: They're exceptional students, courageous human beings, and Stand for Children's 2019 Beat the Odds scholarship recipients. In addition to fighting for better policies and equitable funding to help all students succeed, Stand supports sending students to college who might not otherwise have that privilege.
Beat the Odds scholars have faced homelessness, violence, loss, and other circumstances so unimaginable, you wouldn't blame them for giving up — but they never have. These students have cleared every hurdle in their path, and soon, thanks to the generosity of donors, they'll be headed to college to continue chasing their dreams.
On Giving Tuesday and throughout the holiday season, I'm thinking not only of these remarkable students, but the countless others who need your support to access a high-quality education that prepares them for success in college or a career.
Your tax-deductible gift will help Stand connect students with the opportunities and support they need to achieve their goals of becoming doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs, and more. Together, we can smooth the way forward for the next generation of young leaders. Please give today.
