For two days in mid-April, more than 50 Stand parent members and organizers from across the country met in Phoenix, Arizona for a workshop focused on effective communication and professional development.
The 2017 Family Engagement & Organizing Retreat offered parent leaders and organizers the opportunity to get together and share ideas about how best to reach the people in their communities and engage them in Stand's work. During the retreat, attendees saw presentations by Aquiles Damiron-Alcantara about sharing their personal stories in a way that inspires others to action, and by Jake Levy-Pollans about amplifying their stories through social media and digital communications. The retreat also featured workshops on team building, goal setting, and community organizing.
Parents and organizers left the retreat feeling energized and inspired to meet the particular challenges and solve the unique issues they face to ensure that children in their communities have access to a quality public education.
