‘Twas the right of our children, to go to great schools
And learn math and writing, and all critical tools
For future success, whether career or college,
It takes a village to fill them with knowledge.
The students, alert and snug with their backpacks
Had visions of As and diplomas, not cutbacks.
Soon moms, dads, and students across all the land
Learned that they’re not all dealt a fair hand.
Low funding, few teachers, inadequate prep
Inferior standards and just plain bad rep -
Too many schools have these problems and more
Yet education is crucial for opening doors.
Soon came along Stand for Children with passion
To improve odds for students in a unique fashion
By organizing parents to help pass policies
On literacy, pre-K, and things such as these.
20 years we’ve fought on behalf of girls and boys
In Colorado, Texas, Oregon, Arizona, Illinois.
Oklahoma, Massachusetts, Indiana, Washington
Tennessee, Louisiana – our work has just begun
to change the course for students and close achievement gaps
Our children deserve better; education cannot lapse.
Next year on our list are some formidable goals:
Boosting grad rates & attendance, getting people to the polls
Early reading, early learning, fixing funding, prepping teachers
So that parents can cheer on their grad from the bleachers.
We empower our members to show up, speak up, and reach out
On behalf of children, because without a doubt –
They are the future; they deserve the best
So, happy holidays to all, and – well, you know the rest.
