Stand for Children Washington seeks a talented and dynamic Marketing and Communications Manager to expand the reach and effectiveness of our mission by elevating and promoting the voice of Stand for Children as a leader in education advocacy.

Responsibilities

Provide hands-on support to Executive Director focused on implementation of overall affiliate communications and public relations strategy in conjunction with communications consultants

  • Help execute on communications strategy to ensure an overarching and high-impact communications and digital communications plan in support of all state and district advocacy, electoral and community engagement efforts;
  • Be the point person for the Stand Washington team for the extensive communications, digital tools, and resources available through Stand for Children;
  • Help execute on a multi-pronged development strategy that includes interaction with high-profile individuals and organizations;
  • Produce content for communications that will support public policy and fundraising goals, in conjunction with Executive Director, Government Affairs Director, Development Manager, and communications consultants;
  • Manage organizational written materials to ensure message discipline, clarity, conciseness, and effectiveness;
  • Provide support for outreach, scheduling, and drafting of letters/emails that help connect Executive Director throughout the community;

Support organization efforts to build and promote Stand for Children’s brand through people-oriented storytelling

  • Help identify and create compelling, persuasive, relevant, and accurate communications content that will increase stakeholder and target audience engagement with the organization and Stand for Children’s public policy and community outreach goals;
  • Seek ways to strengthen awareness campaigns that utilize innovative social media tools as well as traditional communication channels to engage members of the community most effectively;
  • Manage Stand content so that it is in alignment with Stand for Children’s brand and adhere to network-wide messaging guidelines;
  • Work with communications consultants to develop and execute on a plan to establish and control the public narrative about Stand for Children and engage in building a crisis communications plan;

Build and leverage public relations and earned media opportunities

  • Create and maintain database of media contacts for disseminating press releases in addition to elected officials, community/regional/statewide leaders, and subject matter experts who comprise Stand’s target audiences and/or who may be allies of Stand on specific policy endeavors;  
  • Track Stand’s local and state media coverage as well as news about policy initiatives that are important and influential to Stand positions;
  • Track general education coverage (and reporter social media chatter) in Washington to track reporter and outlet interest on various aspects of the debate;
  • Support logistics of earned media scheduling, execution.

Qualifications

  • A shared belief in Stand for Children’s mission and strategy to ensure that all children, regardless of their background, graduate from high school prepared for and with access to a college education;
  • 2-5 years’ experience in communications and/or public relations (journalism, political campaigns, issue advocacy experience a plus);
  • Sense of humor is a must;
  • Collaborative, learning-oriented team player;
  • Skilled at developing straightforward, clear and persuasive content;
  • Ability to identify and coordinate with Stand leadership in the event of a crisis communications situation;
  • Hands-on understanding and ability to manage and make recommendations on Stand’s social media presence including Twitter, Facebook, and identifying additional online channels in the industry or policy space where Stand could amplify its voice;
  • Outstanding and fast writing and editing skills, excellent planning and organizational ability, exceptional attention to detail, high sense of urgency and flexibility with shifting priorities;
  • Ability to rapidly learn about public education issues and other related political advocacy issues, when necessary;
  • Basic understanding of how state government works;
  • Spanish fluency is a plus;
  • Ability to be stationary for extended periods of time and ability to travel to meetings outside of the office; May require the ability to climb stairs.
