Huddled under umbrellas in the freezing rain, Stand for Children Massachusetts members gathered with nearly 500 fellow activists outside the State House to call on lawmakers to update the education funding formula this year.
Secretary of Education James Peyser addressed the crowd, praising the collaboration among the 20 different organizations that gathered together for the historic event.
Carol Langley, a parent and Stand member from Brockton, also took the stage to encourage fair funding supporters to continue the fight.
“Our teachers are resourceful and our students are resilient, but we need fair funding now! We are asking for the same opportunities for our children that kids in other communities have," Langley said.
After the rally, Stand parents hand delivered letters to several legislators' offices asking them to prioritize passing a bill to update the school funding formula within this fiscal year.
Stand Organizing Director Holly Sullivan and I joined partnership organizations in a presentation with the Joint Committee on Education Chairs to hear parent stories about the severe need for additional funding at their schools and why their children can't afford to wait on a fix to the formula. The Chairs said they were in the process of drafting a bill now.
