Last week, State Senator Joseph Boncore and State Representative Michael Day filed an early literacy act to help Massachusetts improve student literacy rates. This new legislation will allocate additional resources to improve literacy rates in high-need school districts and communities.
Right now, 6 out of 10 low-income students in Massachusetts are not reading where they should be by the end of third grade; this has life-long consequences. Children who can't read proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.
We can do better, Massachusetts; children should not fail in life because they can't read. Our state must invest in early literacy – add your name to show your support and urge lawmakers to invest in early literacy.
