    Rayne Martin joined Stand for Children in December 2011 as Louisiana’s Executive Director. She leads the organization in its mission to advocate for a better educational system for all students and empower and train everyday people to become effective advocates on fundamental education issues.

  • Monica Candal

    Policy and Data Analyst

    Monica returned home to Louisiana in 2011 after living across the U.S. for the past ten years. She is a graduate of Brown University with an B.S. in Environmental Science. After teaching sixth grade mathematics in Oakland, California, Monica decided to expand her understanding of the relationship between students’ home and school lives, so she is currently pursuing her doctorate in Education Administration and Policy from the University of Michigan. The focus of Monica’s dissertation is parent involvement in New Orleans schools. As a member of the Stand for Children Louisiana team, Monica works closely with teachers and parents from across the state to develop policy resources that support their advocacy efforts.

    After working as a children’s book editor for several years, Jan began her transition into the nonprofit sector in 2009 by working as an adult education ESL teacher with Literacy*AmeriCorps of New Orleans. A second year of AmeriCorps — this time as a VISTA member assigned to a Latino community development nonprofit — gave her experience with research, data collection, and education advocacy for English language learners in New Orleans public schools. As a member of the Stand for Children – Louisiana team, she continues to work toward equalizing educational opportunities for children of all backgrounds.
