I was put on this Earth to serve children and families. When I talk to parents about their child's experience in the juvenile justice system, one thing often stands out: excessive fees and costs, unrelated to the charges or convictions, that haunt families for far too long. For those who struggle to pay the costs, excessive fees can keep children and families involved in the system — and possibly out of school — for longer than is necessary, practical, or ethical.
I am proud to support House Bill 216 by Representative Royce Duplessis. This bill would eliminate all fees, costs, and taxes within the Louisiana juvenile justice system. This doesn't impact fines associated with a conviction, but does eliminate the administrative fees that currently burden system-involved families.
Let's let kids be kids. Let's get students out of the juvenile justice system and back into the classroom. Let's put a dent in the school to prison pipeline.
