This is one post in a series made possible by a grant from Capital Area United Way. The grant allowed Stand for Children Louisiana to provide direct cash transfers to twelve qualified members to support quality early education and/or continuing adult education.

I've been involved with Stand Louisiana for three years and the most essential thing I have learned is the importance of being prepared. I started attending Stand Louisiana meetings even before having kids, since my mother had been so heavily involved with the orgnization and encouraged me to go to my first meeting. I wanted to make sure that I was prepared to tackle the public school system here in Louisiana for my younger nieces, nephews, and future children. What particularly drew me in to Stand Louisiana was noticing that there was a community of parents and friends willing to help all children succeed.

Now, I am a mother to two daughters and am so glad that I have this community of people willing to help me at every step. Covid hit during my last pregnancy and I was furloughed from my job and unsure how I would pay for childcare for my older daughter. With help from Capital Area United Way and Stand Louisiana, I was able to pay for my child’s daycare at Shiloh Baptist Church Early Learning Academy. This was a true blessing for me as I was able to look for a new job during this time without worrying about childcare.

Stand Louisiana taught me that some centers offer quality education while others may be less rigorous for students. I am so glad my children attend Shiloh because they offer a high quality education that is preparing them for kindergarten and beyond.

Thankfully, I have started my new career as an electrical drafter at an engineering firm and am able to support my family. I am incredibly grateful to Stand Louisiana and Capital Area United Way for their efforts to better children’s education and help families along the way.
