I am proud to coach and know JoI Johnson, captain of Istrouma High School's Basketball Team and Student Body President!
JoI joined Stand in 2018 during her sophomore year at Istrouma. Over the past three years, JoI has transformed into a fierece advocate for the students in East Baton Rouge, frequently attending school board meetings, writing to and meeting with local government leaders, and organizing her peers. She has truly become a community leader and I have witnessed her develop her leadership skills both on and off the court.
JoI’s impact has encouraged her peers to speak up and share their vision for their parish and community. Last month, JoI graduated salutatorian from Istrouma and was granted a full presidential academic scholarship at Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama. She plans to study political science, attend law school, and become district attorney. The world is already a better, more equitable place thanks to JoI's work, and she is certainly committed to continuing her fight for justice.
This past weekend, we honored JoI with the Impact Certificate and a $500 academic scholarship to support her ongoing academic pursuits. Today, I invite you to join me in congratulating JoI for her many impressive accomplishments!
