The Indianapolis Public Schools Education Foundation (IPSEF) is proud to announce it has been awarded a $505,000 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. in support of Indianapolis Public Schools’ (IPS) parent engagement strategy. Under the leadership of IPS Superintendent Dr. Lewis Ferebee, IPS has emphasized parent and community stakeholder engagement as the district implements its plan to improve underperforming schools.
IPSEF will use the grant to bolster and grow IPS’ community organizing and engagement efforts, led by Stand for Children Leadership Center Indiana – an IPS partner since January 2014. Stand Indiana’s engagement model, which includes the Stand University for Parents (Stand UP) parent education program, is specifically designed to empower parents to become valuable partners in IPS’ mission to improve struggling schools.
“IPS is thrilled to receive the support of Lilly Endowment to bolster our parent engagement efforts. Families are critical partners as we strive to provide excellent educational opportunities for our students,” Dr. Ferebee commented, “Stand Indiana has a unique and effective program to engage parents as advocates for educational excellence. This generous gift will allow many more families to participate in Stand Indiana’s parent engagement program. We look forward to hearing the voices of these families as we shape our continuous improvement.”
Since Dr. Ferebee took leadership of IPS in September 2013, district graduation rates have increased from 65.4 percent in 2012 to 72.1 percent in 2015; and IPS has reduced the number of failing schools by 56 percent.
