Stand for Children Indiana’s Executive Director Justin Ohlemiller issued a statement today on the passage of HB 1003.  The measure, which would prohibit lower ISTEP scores from affecting teacher pay or bonuses for one year, was unanimously approved by the Senate by a 48-0 vote.  The House then concurred 95-1 today with amendments to the bill and sent it on to Governor Pence for consideration: The Governor has already signed the measure.

“We applaud the unanimous Senate passage of this measure and the swift Indiana House concurrence. At a time when the state is transitioning to an assessment aligned to Indiana’s new, higher standards, this ‘hold harmless’ provision is the right thing to do for our teachers.

“Educators deserve the time and opportunity to adjust to changes to our standards and assessments – which amount to nothing short of a reset button for our education system. With the leadership and hard work of our tremendous Hoosier educators, I’m confident students across the state will excel past the new, higher bar that has been established with our rigorous college-and-career-ready standards.”
