IPS District 1: Michael O'Connor
Michael O’Connor stated in his Stand Indiana candidate survey that if he’s elected to serve on the IPS school board, one of his priorities is “to make IPS a model of an urban education system that focuses on children and families and succeeds in delivering a first-class education to ALL our children.”
Since replacing the resigning former district one commissioner in August 2015, O’Connor’s record demonstrates his support for school autonomy, with strong accountability; and he is a stated advocate of efforts to bring a unified enrollment system to IPS. O’Connor also backs increasing efforts to recruit and retain talented teachers.
“As a board, we must fight for fair and equitable teacher salaries, but we must also empower teachers to do what they do best – TEACH!”
In 2014, O'Connor worked with former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and the City-County Council to pass the Indianapolis Early Childhood Education program -- which included a pre-K pilot program.
O’Connor is the Director of State Government Affairs for Eli Lilly and Company, where he has primary responsibility for developing and implementing Lilly Corporate Strategy. He previously served as Chief Deputy Mayor and Chief of Staff to former Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson.
