Joy was born and raised on the south side of Chicago and is a product of the Chicago Public Schools system. She attended Curtis elementary and Corliss High School. She later earned her B.A at Chicago State University in Psychology. While she was a full-time student and employee, Joy remained dedicated to the love of her life, her son. He graduated from a Chicago International Charter School where he served as captain of the football team.
Joy has many interests, however none is more important than education and gun violence prevention. Joy has a long history of taking action by volunteering and advocating for those issues that are dearest to her.
Joy took the leap and left the corporate world, deciding to dedicate her time and energy to the issues that matter to her the most by becoming a field organizer with Stand for Children. In this role, she assists Stand-endorsed candidates, while also overseeing field operations.
