My daughter is in college now and I have appreciated the opportunities her public school experience afforded her along the way, things like AP classes and dual credit, taught by great teachers. But I also saw the times when the funding wasn’t there to support everything our kids deserved, like when the district couldn’t afford basic technology upgrades and had to end good programs.
Now, as a foster mom, I’ve had five different teenagers come through my home, some for months and some for just a couple days. All of them deserve the same opportunity for a great education, and should have the individualized supports they need to succeed. But that’s hard to provide because our district only has 70% of the resources it needs to adequately serve all our students.
That’s why we need Springfield to fight for a budget that fully funds our schools. Contact your representative today and urge them to finish the job.
Last year Illinois enacted historic legislation that overhauled our broken school funding formula. Now we have a system that gives students in every school a chance to succeed.
But we can’t stop now. The legislature is scheduled to adjourn tomorrow, so time is of the essence. We need your representative to finish the job and vote for a budget that fully funds our schools.
I’ve worked on school funding for years, so I am glad that we now have a smarter, fairer school funding formula. But it’s not enough to fix the formula. We need to give our schools the resources they need, too. For each and every Illinois student – their future is worth the fight.
