You probably heard the good news last week. After some technical fixes to last summer’s historic school funding formula, new equity funding is going to districts across Illinois!

Not only that, but thanks to a recently proposed budget from Chicago Public Schools, CPS principals now have more time to plan effectively for next year and students will attend schools with better resources and increased access to quality programs. That’s a win-win-win in my book.

Thanks to the work of everyday Illinoisans who championed that new school formula, our more equitable school funding formula is a reality! School districts across our state will receive more resources thanks to the law, with more funding going to underserved districts first. This development is important for so many reasons, but it’s also a reminder that our job is not yet done.

We have work to do in Springfield to ensure that the new school funding formula lives up to its potential. $350 million in new funding is flowing to schools across the state, but we must ensure another $350 million is added to the formula this year to keep us on the path to adequate funding. If we don’t, the progress that started when the formula became law will be short lived.

Take a second today to email your state legislators and tell them to support our students with adequate and equitable funding in the FY2019 budget.

This is good news for Illinois students as more equitable funding goes to districts. But let’s commit to rolling up our sleeves and seeing the work through.
