Since I’ve been a member of Stand for Children Illinois, one of the most rewarding experiences as an education advocate has been my time as a member of the Oglesby Elementary School Local School Council.
Prior to joining the LSC at Oglesby, I had been involved with the LSC at Stagg School for seven years. I decided to join my LSC because I wanted to have a voice in my children’s education. I learned more about the program through Stand, and I knew it was for me.
As a member of the LSC for over 10 years, I have gained insights into the school’s budget process and how the school uses the budget to improve itself. LSC members get a seat at the table for important decisions like this and the hiring of principals.
It is so important for parents to be engaged in their children’s education. I can’t encourage parents enough to run for their own school’s LSC. Not only because of the decision-making role of a parent for their child’s education, but it also gives you a voice during important debates and decisions that directly impact your school. That’s a powerful thing to have.
