Last night’s primary election brought some important wins for Illinois students, but our work is not done.
Six of the eight candidates that the Stand for Children IL PAC endorsed won.
We warmly congratulate Rep. Christian Mitchell (D), who won his primary and will be continuing his courageous fight for fair funding for all kids. We are so pleased about the primary victories of these education champions from both sides of the aisle whose districts span from Chicago down to south of Springfield: Rep. Thaddeus Jones (D), Sen. Patricia Van Pelt (D), Sen. Mike Hastings (D), Rep. Avery Bourne (R), and Sen. Sam McCann (R).
Civil rights leader Marian Wright Edelman once said: "We have for years talked about personal responsibility and community responsibility. We all know that government is not the answer to our problems. I grew up in the South, where government was the problem for me as a black child and government perpetuated a two-tier system. Our role is to make sure that government is part of the solution, not part of the problem."
And that’s why Stand for Children gets involved in politics. Building better public schools means electing tenacious legislators from both parties who take courageous votes and strong stances on student-focused policies.
